- Shaft or Sidney Poitier directed by Jonathan Gayles.
This documentary critically examines the earliest representations (1965-1977) of Black masculinity in comic books and the troubling influence of race on these representations. Thinking critically about the manner in which Black men were first portrayed in hero serials provides insight into broader societal conceptions of the Black man as character, archetype and symbol. Through interviews with prominent artists, scholars and cultural critics along with images from the comic books themselves, it becomes clear that the Black superheroes that did eventually emerge are generally constrained by stereotypical understandings of Black people and Black men in particular. From the humorous, to the offensive, to the tragic, early Black superheroes never strayed too far from common stereotypes about Black men. (Documentary) (Rated G)

10:00 a.m. - Writing Music for Motion Picture - All-Day Workshop

Writing music for motion picture is much more than selecting a great song that fits a scene. In this interactive workshop, David Ernst will present step-by-step strategies to write great music for motion pictures. You will learn:

  • What to do first -- how do you find out what your client is asking for or wanting you to create in their motion picture?
  • How to capture the message to be communicated to the target audience.
  • How to work with the timeline and order of events.
  • Using dynamics to create intensity.
  • Sound selection and instrument layering.
  • How to use instruments -- for example, the flute. Use major scales to show happiness, light-hearted, joyful, loving and soaring.
  • And much, much more.

David Ernst is excited to bring this workshop to UMFF 2010. He will take up to three film scenes from UMFF filmmakers and score them during the workshop. Experience live scoring from a music master, and get up-close and personal experience in writing music for motion picture.

Dave started playing the piano at age five learning the basics of music theory as well as having a natural gift. By age 13, he was performing in the local church and was heavily influenced by gospel music. His passion grew and by age 20, he had performed in front of thousands at The Brooklyn Tabernacle, and Times Square Church as well as organizing a 3 piece jazz band to do some moonlighting while attending college.

While working at Normandy Sound, Dave learned the basic principles of recording and mastering. He moved on to became producer of a weekly radio program, and was responsible for writing music behind commercials and editing the broadcast. In the late 90's, Dave was the music director of a large church in Wayland Massachusetts. His accomplishments range from writing music used on websites to film scoring.

Today, Dave lives in New England, owns a Protools-based studio. He is currently producing and managing the hip hop group, The Departed Krew, in Portland, ME. 11:00 a.m. - Film Screening - Documentary Feature

Why Us? Left Behind and Dying directed by Claudia Pryor (Stanford, CT)
“Why Us? Left Behind and Dying” is the story of a small group of inner-city African-American teenagers, ages 14-17, exploring the social, cultural, and scientific reasons why HIV rates are disproportionately high in black America and Africa.

They come from Pittsburgh's Westinghouse High School-- academically one of the lowest rated high schools in Pennsylvania. They are often left behind by the larger society and their community has been left behind in the fight against HIV/AIDS. (African-Americans are only about 13% of US population, but account for 45% of HIV cases).

This film is simultaneously a documentary and a research project. The students’ faces are not shown because they were research subjects --minor children in an abstinence-based school district talking about their own sex lives. The goal was to find out if working on this film would change the students' beliefs, attitudes, or sexual behavior.

The students interview HIV positive heterosexuals, homosexuals, and intravenous drug users. They question scientists who are searching for the origin of AIDS. They explore the connection between HIV and secrecy, gender inequality, and homophobia in the black community. They also find out how prison incarceration, racism, and poverty help the virus flourish in their world. The film is structured entirely from the students' point of view as interviewers and as participants. At the end, we find out what difference this experience made in their lives, if any.
